Throughout the year, the public is invited to enjoy the birds and wildlife at the Sanctuary with special education programs. These weekly events allow visitors to experience the pristine Sanctuary along the Currituck Sound, and foster connections with birds, wildlife and the conservation efforts to preserve and protect the places they need.

2.5 Mile Nature Trail

This self-guided walk is available dawn to dusk daily. The path is a short three miles, and wanders through an evergreen maritime forest of live oaks, pine and maritime scrub. Warblers and other migrant and resident forest birds are common – as are many mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The trail has two elevated overlooks providing picturesque views of the sound where hikers can spot wading birds in summer and waterfowl in winter.

Kayak and Stand Up Paddle Board Program

In collaboration with Coastal Kayak Touring Company, the Audubon Sanctuary is offering 2-hour tours of the most intricate marsh maze on the Outer Banks. Tours traverse a section of our 2,600 acres of marsh, which is frequented by Osprey, river otters and wading birds. Bald Eagles are sometimes spotted and Clapper Rails rattle in the grasses. Family Programming

Each summer, family friendly programs are offered at the Historic Hunt Lodge. From nature hikes exploring the ecology of the Sanctuary to classes that dive into the history of the original Pine Island Hunt Club, there are many opportunities for the entire family to enjoy a visit to the Sanctuary.
